More and more vape shops are opening around the country. So they are easy to find and readily available. You have to be 18 and older to buy them.

Here are some of the most common questions and answers about vaping.

What are e-cigarettes?

E-cigarettes, also known as vaporizers. They are battery-powered devices that heat up a mixture of nicotine, a flavouring, and a liquid, into a vapour for users to inhale.

E-cigarettes have been widely marketed as a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes. Since vaping does not involve burning and smoking tobacco but users still inhale nicotine.

Is Vaping Safe For You

However, recent studies show that many of the health problems traditional cigarette smokers have also come with e-cigarettes.

Due to the nicotine content and other chemicals in the liquid.

The FDA extended its regulation of tobacco products to include e-cigarettes.

To control what goes into the e-liquid and to keep the devices out of the hands of young children.

But even with these regulations, using e-cigarettes can still cause some serious complications to your health.

Vaping vs smoking

Are you thinking of quitting smoking, your not alone, 7 out of 10 smokers have tried to quit smoking as it can benefit your health in many ways.

Lots of smokers are now tempted by e-cigarettes as a genuine alternative to quitting traditional cigarettes. Here are some facts to help you decide if it is for you.

Is vaping safe for your health compared to smoking cigarettes?

Is Vaping Safe For You

E-cigarettes heat nicotine and flavourings into water vapour. Cigarettes have approximately 7000 different chemicals you inhale.

E-cigarettes have far fewer chemicals that are being inhaled. These include carbon monoxide and tar.

The risk of passive smoking is also considerably less. Because there is no burning of chemicals, and there is no carbon monoxide.

On this fact alone, e-cigarettes are far safer than traditional cigarettes.

Is vaping as addictive as cigarettes?

Both E-cigarettes and cigarettes contain the chemical nicotine which is a highly addictive chemical.

There isn’t enough research on e-cigarettes. However, you can get different strength cartridges with no nicotine, a little nicotine and high strength nicotine.

Whilst you are still inhaling the addictive chemical nicotine. You are stepping away from cigarettes and the 7000 chemicals that come with them.

E cigarette side effects

If you use cartridges with nicotine, you still are inhaling addictive chemicals. The ones that keep you addicted to cigarettes, one of the many side effects of nicotine is its addictive nature and how it affects your heart and lungs.

Nicotine causes your heart to beat faster and raised your blood pressure.

E cigarette are addictive

E-cigarettes trigger the brain to release dopamine in exactly the same way as traditional cigarettes do. This is one of the ways that nicotine becomes addictive. The feeling I’m talking about it well known, that craving feeling.

Dopamine is the chemical that your brain releases that gives you that feeling of pleasure (similar to chocolate) and one that smokers crave once they become addicted.

Vaping is still bad for your health

Whilst you are no longer inhaling the 7000 toxins from cigarettes. You are still inhaling nicotine which is the main chemical that causes cravings and addiction.

Nicotine is also the chemical that causes an increase in blood pressure and deprives cells of oxygen. So in my view, I don’t think it should be seen as a long term solution, but perhaps as a way to ease off cigarettes.

Younger generations are more likely to start vaping

E-cigarettes are far more popular among the younger generation compared to cigarettes. This is mainly because they consider vaping to be a safer option. They cost significantly less and they come in colourful fruity flavours.

E-cigarettes also don’t have the smell that traditional cigarettes do. The biggest issue is that vaping is now being taken up by a younger generation that would not necessarily have started smoking cigarettes in the first place.

Verdict, is vaping safe for your health?

Is vaping safe for you? My honest opinion is anything that gets you away from cigarettes is a good thing. If you plan to use something else to help you get off the cigarettes, such as a vaping device, patches or lozenges.

Plan to use them as a short term measure, a stepping stone away from cigarettes. They still contain nicotine. The long term goal is to get away from anything that contains addictive drugs like nicotine and live a healthier life.
